Steelhead are anadromous rainbow trout that spend part of their lives in the ocean and return to fresh water streams to spawn. These fish usually spend from one to two years in the ocean before returning to the streams they originated from.

Steelhead usually migrate upstream with increased stream flows brought on by rains or snow melt depending on where they call home and the time of year they lay their eggs. .

The usual spawning areas are cool, clean streams that have a good gravel base that will provide good water flow for the developing eggs and newly hatched fry.

California, Oregon and Washington have numerous runs of steelhead throughout much of the year. Sportsmen can target ocean bright, fresh fish in almost every large river or small stream that has continuous adequate water flows and access to the sea. Many steelhead that do not have far to migrate will spawn and then return to the ocean. If conditions are good they may be able to spawn several times over their lifetime. Streams where this is common produces fish that will be much larger than average simply due to the growth over the fish’s lifespan.

The Snake River has the longest traveling steelhead strains. These fish actually swim to the Hells Canyon Dam area. These steelhead are the remnants of the runs that at one time migrated into southern Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

Another strain of steelhead known as the B-run fish originated in the Clearwater Basin. These are a larger fish that usually spends at least 2 years in the ocean before returning home to spawn.
The Snake River region has a tremendous steelhead fishery due to a number of hatcheries that produce fish for the various rivers within the drainage.

This fishery has been well publicized over the years with numerous articles and videos.
